A tale of two genres: Engaging audiences in academic blogs and Three Minute Thesis presentations

This paper reports a cross-genre study of how academics engage their audiences in two popular but underexplored academic genres: blogs and Three Minute Thesis (3MT) presentations. Based on corpus 65 blog posts 3MT presentations from social sciences, we examine establish interpersonal rapport with non-specialist the aid engagement resources. The analysis identified new ways informing persuading more diverse audience research both genres. Further analyses revealed features overall deployed presentations, especially those seeking to bring into discussion by mentioning them explicitly, directing think certain ways, addressing questions. Academic bloggers, contrast, emphasized shared knowledge offered parenthetical commentary. variations are explained terms mode context, time-constrained face-to-face competitive context spoken genre. findings have important implications for address taking beyond specialist insiders, they shed light works very different contexts modes.
